Sticking To It

Happy New Year! It's 2017. You're probably ready to put a lid on 2016 and look to the future and all of its opportunities. In our first blog, we want to give you a few tips on how best to do exactly that.

In the first few weeks of the new year resolutions, gyms, and meal plans overflow. But at some point enthusiasm wanes and old habits are reinstated. Here are three tips to help you do things differently this year:

  1. First accept: As long as we see our bodies, our attitudes, and our lives as objects that need to be changed in order to be fully embraced, then we will find our process is one of treading water. With mindfulness and compassion we are reminded that it is not self-help that actually helps us; it is self-examination.
  2. Set intentions rather than goals: Intentions are process-oriented while goals are results-oriented. Focusing on goals denies us gratitude and appreciation for all the learnings along the way if the outcome is other than what we initially sought. With intentions we are better able to remain mindful every step of the way and are less likely to make compromises and take short cuts.
  3. Start today: Time is an often arbitrary measure. Don't wait for a specific date to mark the beginning of something new. Prioritise the list you have created and start with one of those things today. As Lao Tzu stated, the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.
